Once upon a time there were two girls who lived next door to each other. Cinder Edna was forced to work for her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, just as her neighbor, Cinderella, was.

But Cinder Edna did things a bit differently.

Traditional Lit - Cinder Edna

Cinder Edna by Ellen Jackson and illustrator Kevin O'Malley was such a twist on the Cinderella story. We were able to see two sides of the same story but played out a different way. Cinderella and Cinder Edna were next-door neighbors suffering the same fate, and while Cinderella was our classic Cinderella story, Cinder Edna was an independent, problem-solving, practical girl!

This book shows us self-resilience and learning how to make the best of your situation while being funny all at the same time. I enjoyed this book via YouTube where the narrator had different voices and background music. It really added to the parallel lives the two girls lived.

I think this is a great read-aloud book for K-4th grade, and when they get into 5th-6th/7th, we can really start comparing and contrasting their lives and problem-solving.
